Our Story

Marocaine began with my grandmother.

I'm a Moroccan Australian mum of one. When I was 11, my family took me to Morocco to visit relatives, and my grandmother Tamou took me with her to the hammam. Sitting beside her in the steam, I learnt the Berber beauty rituals she had grown up with: oiling our hair before washing it, scrubbing and softening the skin, and finishing with argan and orange blossom. Beauty, for her, was something you made time for.

Meeting the co-operative

I went back to Morocco as an adult on an exchange program while I was studying law. That's when I met the women's co-operative near Agadir, inside Morocco's UNESCO argan biosphere reserve, who make our certified organic argan oil. I saw first-hand how much care goes into every litre, and how buying from them keeps the value of this precious oil with the women and families who produce it.

Starting, stopping and starting again

I launched Marocaine in 2011. In 2016 I began working as a lawyer, and the corporate world slowly took over. My own rituals, and Marocaine, fell by the wayside.

Becoming a mother in 2025 changed that. I wanted to slow down, take care of myself again, and build something meaningful for my family. So I decided to bring Marocaine back, with the rituals Tamou taught me at its heart.

Small batches, made with care

Every bottle is poured, labelled and packed by hand in Melbourne. I make our blends in small batches, so they are always fresh, and I'll admit to a habit of overfilling every bottle. Generosity is part of the ritual.
